Favela to the World 2009-2012
After the first phase of activity during Favela
to the World 2006-8, People's Palace Projects has been reviewing
the programme to explore how the project can best facilitate both the
extraordinary momentum established by many partners, and the range of
ideas and priorities that are emerging. These are some of the activities
that will be developed through to 2012:
Cultural
Warriors
Cultural Warriors is a three-year youth leadership collaboration
jointly realised by People’s Palace Projects, Grupo Cultural AfroReggae,
Contact, Lawnmowers Theatre Company, The Sage Gateshead and Theatre Royal
Stratford East as part of the Favela to the World programme.
The collaboration seeks to build each partner's capacity in supporting
young people to be active and innovative in bringing about change in their
communities and the lives of other young people. The Cultural Warriors
programme seeks to inspire young people to fight for social transformation
through art and culture, realizing their own artistic potential and building
the self-esteem and citizenship of young people in their communities.
The programme will launch in January 2010.
Favela to the World Residencies
We are developing a new approach to learning both for our partners and
for ourselves as an organisation, where we will facilitate and support
residencies of major Brazilian artists in UK institutions within the frame
of Favela to the World. These will vary in duration and will
aim to offer:
- New institutional energy and insight for the host in relation to their
mission and practice
- New skills across staff teams and wider participant
groups
- Skills and leadership development work with young people and
wider artistic and professional networks involved with the host organisation
- Outreach activities as defined for each residency
- Where appropriate,
R&D for planned creative projects
We completed a two-week residency by AfroReggae in October 2009 at Dance
City, Newcastle. The core activity of the programme was a creative collaboration
between AfroReggae and resident company at Dance City, Bad Taste Cru.
